My ongoing project, Sightlines, includes a series of photographic lightbox assemblages that examines photography’s historical role in patriarchal and colonialist efforts to control both land and the female body. By reappropriating 19th-century survey photographs by William Bell and reimagining Edward Weston’s iconic nudes as self-portraits, I aim to reclaim and transform these canonical images through a layered process that bridges analogue and digital techniques. This process involves slicing the edges of my old 35mm negatives and overlaying them onto multiple exposures that merge Bell’s landscapes with Weston’s compositions re-enacted through my own body. These layered elements are then assembled and backlit within custom lightboxes, creating illuminated spaces where the histories of image-making, self-representation, and landscape converge.
